Rib injuries are one of the most common types of catastrophic injuries in Texas. There are three main types of rib injuries: bruised ribs, broken ribs, and fractured ribs. It can be difficult to tell them apart, but it is important to know the difference so that you can get the proper treatment in case you experience a rib injury.

Bruised ribs

Bruised ribs occur when the soft tissue between the bones gets damaged. Usually, this happens when the ribs are compressed, such as during a car accident or a fall. The symptoms of bruised ribs include pain and tenderness in the affected area, as well as bruising.

Broken ribs

A broken rib is a break in one of the bones that make up the rib cage. This type of injury usually occurs as a result of trauma, such as a car accident or a fall. Sometimes, it can also occur due to a medical condition, such as osteoporosis. The symptoms of a broken rib include severe pain in the affected area, as well as difficulty breathing, especially if the break is in the upper part of the rib cage.

Fractured ribs

A “fracture” is the same as a “break,” but many people consider it to be a more serious injury. A fractured rib is a break in the bone that may be accompanied by displacement of the fragments. This type of injury usually occurs as a result of trauma, such as a car accident or a fall. The symptoms of this catastrophic injury include severe pain in the affected area, as well as difficulty breathing. In some cases, the person may also cough up blood.

Rib injuries can be very painful and can make it difficult to breathe. If the injury is severe enough, it can even be life-threatening. So, if you experience any symptoms of a rib injury, don’t hesitate to seek medical help.
